Time Well Spent:
Exploring untouched Indonesia

Avoid the crowds as you venture off the beaten track on a life-affirming journey through Indonesia, a tropical archipelago scattered with pristine beaches, ancient temples and spectacular wildlife. Curated in partnership with time design expert and best-selling author James Wallman, the fifth adventure in our ‘Time Well Spent’ series is full of special experiences, from seeing komodo dragons in the wild to witnessing age-old local traditions.

This exclusive two-week itinerary is only possible by private jet, whisking you from point to point and linking undeveloped areas that commercial flights can’t reach. The 2,000-mile route would take at least a week longer via scheduled services, with an extra 25 hours in the air and entire days lost waiting for infrequent and connecting flights. By contrast, our private jet charters are carefully planned to help you make the very most of each unique experience, ensuring every second of your trip is time well spent.

Days 1-2:

Witness an ancient ritual in Banten

Touch down in Banten, a beguiling region of ancient ruins and unspoilt beaches on Java’s western tip. The mountains here are home to the native Baduy people, who live in total seclusion without modern technology. Trekking deep into the forest, you’ll have the rare opportunity to witness the annual Seba ritual, watching as members of this elusive tribe depart on foot for the provincial capital with an offering of homegrown crops. The 115-kilometre pilgrimage symbolises their deep commitment to preserving the area’s ancestral heritage and is an intriguing insight into age-old traditions.

Later, swap Banten’s wild landscapes for Jakarta’s soaring skyscrapers as you check-in for an overnight stay at The Langham. Located in the heart of Indonesia’s buzzing capital, this vertiginous hotel is steeped in British elegance with gleaming marble corridors, polished wooden floors and floor-to-ceiling windows at every turn – not to mention a sky-high pool with fabulous views. Make the most of your time in the culturally diverse city by touring Dutch colonial architecture and perusing the bustling markets for mementoes to take home.

Days 2-3:

Spot rare Komodo dragons in the wild

Hop back on your private jet to the far-flung Lesser Sunda Islands, where the dramatic landscapes range from forest-cloaked volcanoes to turquoise oceans. Landing on Komodo, you’ll take a thrilling speedboat ride to a nearby private island, where the exclusive Komodo Resort nestles in a sheltered bay bordering Komodo National Park. Your home for tonight is a luxurious teak bungalow, set steps from a beach where crystal-clear waters teem with brightly-coloured fish, sea turtles and manta rays.

The UNESCO-listed park is the only place on earth where Komodo dragons still live in the wild, leading to plans to restrict tourist access from mid-2025 to protect the endangered reptiles and their delicate ecosystem. While you may not be able to hike through their natural habitat, you can still explore responsibly with a private yacht charter, cruising along the coast to watch these extraordinary blue-tongued creatures from a respectful distance. In addition to wildlife spotting, your knowledgeable skipper will help you uncover the natural beauty of the surrounding islands on rainforest treks and snorkelling adventures.

Days 3-5:

Discover Mount Kelimutu’s colour-changing lakes

Today you’ll be whisked by helicopter to Flores Island for a sunset hike up to Mount Kelimutu’s iconic crater lakes. These mesmerising pools change colour depending on the minerals and gases bubbling below the surface, so you never know what you’re going to find – one might glow a bright turquoise whilst another is shrouded in blackness. Whatever awaits at the top, watch in awe as the light dwindles and the sun slips below the horizon.

When you’re not out exploring, Flores Passport House is perfectly positioned for relaxing and soaking up the scenery. This boutique bed-and-breakfast offers stunning vistas of lush hillsides and the glittering sea beyond, along with authentic home-cooked local cuisine and an outdoor pool where you can chill out in the sun whilst reflecting on the journey so far.

Days 5-10:

Watch the sunrise from a mountaintop in East Timor

Fly by private jet to the South-East Asian nation of East Timor, a largely undeveloped former Portuguese colony spanning half the island of Timor. You’ll have the best of both worlds during your five nights here, feeling like you’ve got the place almost to yourself when exploring off the beaten track before returning to the Hilton Dili Palm Springs, a sleek urban retreat with a spa and rooftop pool on the north coast.

This leg of your trip is packed with once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Marvel at breathtaking natural landscapes as you pad along the powdery sands of One Dollar Beach and scale Mount Ramelau’s sacred summit at sunrise. Discover rare natural wonders, cruising on a lake to an eerie half-sunken forest and snorkelling along one of the world’s most biodiverse reefs. And immerse yourself in rich cultural heritage, from spearfishing on Atauro Island to visiting indigenous totem houses that connect residents to their ancestors’ spirits.

Days 10-12:

Relax in a beachfront pool villa on Gili Air Island

Wave goodbye to East Timor and board a private jet to Bali, touching down for a private boat transfer to Gili Air Island. This tropical paradise off the coast of Lombok blends palm-fringed beaches and frangipani-scented gardens with authentic charm for an irresistibly laid-back escape. You’ll spend the next two nights enjoying blissful rest and relaxation at Villa Tokay, a boutique collection of boho-chic bamboo villas by the beach. It’s the perfect place to unwind, so kick off your shoes, sink into your infinity pool and embrace the slower pace of life.

There’s little need to leave the barefoot luxury of your villa, where you can flop into a gently swaying hammock and savour a soothing massage or fragrant flower bath, but it’s well worth tearing yourself away for a soothing beachfront yoga session or a sunset cruise along the coast. There’s also the rewarding opportunity to give back to the local community on a weekly beach clean-up arranged by the Gili Shark Conservation, adding a new depth to your visit while reducing the footprint you leave behind.

jouney-of-a-lifetime-bali

Days 12-14:

Reflect on the journey of a lifetime in Bali

Board a private boat back to mainland Bali for the final two nights of your trip. Nestled by a sacred river in the town of Ubud, Amori Villas is the perfect place to reflect on the past two weeks. Guests are outnumbered by staff members at this boutique wellness retreat, so attentive service is guaranteed as you practise yoga and meditation, unwind in the spa and learn how to whip up authentic Balinese cuisine. Just say the word and your butler will arrange local experiences such as climbing Mount Batur or attending a temple ceremony.

Throw yourself into the local culture with an introduction to Balinese mud wrestling or mepantigan, a unique martial art combining elements of taekwondo, silat, capoeira, kickboxing and judo with local music, dance and costumes. You’ll also get a rare insight into the day-to-day life of Balinese Hindus, joining a local family in their home as they worship sun god Dewa Surya in a bamboo shrine filled with offerings. After bidding your hosts goodbye, it’s time to board a private charter back to the UK.
